You probably do it every day without thinking twice: you put on a series, press play and, in a couple of seconds, the music starts and the image appears. You neither download the whole episode nor wait for it to load. Behind that very natural gesture is one of the most elegant pieces of internet engineering: streaming. We explain it to you without technical jargon.
First, forget about downloading
When you download a file, your computer or phone copies it entirely before you can use it. With streaming that does not happen. Here you do not wait to have the whole episode: the platform sends it to you in little pieces, in order, and you watch it in real time.
It is like drinking from a fountain without filling the glass. Instead of first filling a giant tank, the water (the data) arrives and you consume it on the spot. That is why it is called “continuous transmission”: the information flows constantly while you receive it.
The video is cut into slices
Imagine that a two-hour film were a single enormous block travelling across the network. It would be incredibly heavy and any problem would ruin everything. That is why it is divided into tiny pieces, of just a few seconds, that are sent one after another.
Each little piece travels like a small packet with its address, just like a letter with its postcode. They can take different routes through the network, but they all arrive at your screen and are reassembled in order. That division into small pieces is the key to everything working so fast and to being able to jump to any part of the video without waiting.
Where everything is stored: servers and the “buffer”
The episodes and films do not live at your house, but in huge data warehouses called servers. They are very powerful computers, spread around the world, that store copies of the content. When you open the app, your device asks the nearest server for those little pieces you need.
You may have heard of the “buffer”. It is a small reserve of data that your player stores in advance so that it always has material to spare while it plays. If one little piece takes a bit longer to arrive, you do not notice because there is already reserve waiting. When the connection is tight and the reserve runs out, that is when the spinning wheel appears and the video stops.
Adapting to bandwidth
Not all connections are the same. Someone with super-fast fibre can watch the video in maximum quality, and someone using a slower network will see a more blurred image. The interesting thing is that the platform knows this and adapts on its own.
While you play, the system is constantly checking how long each little piece takes to arrive. If it sees the network has plenty of capacity, it raises the quality; if it is tight, it lowers it so that it does not cut out. All this happens without you touching anything, and it is what allows a series to look good on a phone with 4G or on a TV over fibre.
Why it reaches so many people at once
When millions of people watch the premiere of the same series on the same night, the network does not collapse. How do they manage it? The most popular content is copied onto many servers spread around the world, close to the users. So, instead of everyone pulling from a single distant computer, each person receives the data from the nearest server.
It is a distribution network in which the copies of the content are handed out as if they were newspapers: instead of printing them all in one place and carrying them to every corner, local copies are prepared so that the distribution is fast and cheap.
What comes next
Streaming does not stop at video. Today we use it for music, video games (playing without downloading the game), and even for cloud computing, where computing power travels over the internet. More and more things are “streamed continuously” instead of installed.
Of course there are also challenges: video uses a lot of energy and demands increasingly powerful networks. That is why advances in compression, which pack more quality into less data, are so important. Thanks to them we see better with the same internet as always.
