Local vs cloud: what it’s like to use AI on a computer without an internet connection Have you ever wondered what it would be like to use artificial intelligence without having to be connected to the internet? The truth is this changes things, especially when we talk about privacy and security. So far, most of the AI services we use depend on the cloud, that is, remote servers that process our data. But what if I told you that companies are already developing devices that let you run these algorithms directly on your computer, without needing to be online? This is what really matters: keeping control over our data while continuing to enjoy the advantages of AI. By being able to run artificial intelligence models locally, the risks associated with the constant transfer of information over the internet are reduced. I don’t know about you, but to me this seems like a huge step toward a more secure and private experience, especially for those who handle sensitive information or simply prefer not to always be connected. And here’s the interesting part: running AI locally doesn’t mean sacrificing power or functionality. Thanks to advances in hardware and software optimization, these devices are designed to handle complicated tasks without relying on external servers. This not only improves response speed, but also allows you to use artificial intelligence in places with little or no connectivity, something that until recently seemed impossible. Of course, not everything is perfect. Local storage and processing can have limitations, and model updates can be slower or more complicated compared to the cloud. But at the end of the day, what matters is finding a balance between convenience, security and performance that suits our needs.
