It seems that the governments of the world have realised that keeping their most sensitive data on servers of American companies was perhaps not the best idea. According to a Gartner report, global spending on sovereign cloud infrastructure will reach 80 billion dollars in 2026, an increase of 35.6% compared to the previous year. The idea is simple: every country wants to have its own cloud, with its own rules and without depending on third parties.
Europe is leading this trend, driven by increasingly strict regulations on data protection and digital sovereignty. Projects such as Gaia-X and the French initiative Policloud, which plans to deploy 1,000 sovereign AI micro data centres by 2030, are only the tip of the iceberg. The big question is whether these sovereign clouds will be able to compete in performance and price with giants such as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, or whether they will remain an expensive political whim.
