Is your phone a few years old? Then this news is for you. WhatsApp will stop working on a list of old phones starting 10 August 2026. If your device is on the list, the app will start failing little by little: first it will stop updating and later you could have problems sending messages or making calls. We explain what’s happening and, above all, what you can do so you don’t end up cut off.
Why does WhatsApp stop working on old phones?
Think of your phone as a house. Every year, WhatsApp wants to install new pipes, safer windows and a better alarm system. But there are houses so old they can’t withstand those works: the pipes don’t fit or the walls can’t take it. Something similar happens with old phones. They can’t run the new versions of the operating system, which is the base program that makes the phone work (on iPhones it’s called iOS and on everything else, Android).
What’s more, these phones no longer receive security updates. A security update is like a vaccine for the phone: it fixes holes through which cybercriminals could slip in to steal your conversations or your data. If the manufacturer no longer makes those vaccines, your phone is more exposed. That’s why WhatsApp, which belongs to Meta (the same company as Facebook and Instagram), prefers to stop providing service on those devices rather than risk its users being attacked.
The phones that are left out
The rule is simple: Android phones need at least Android 5.0 (released in 2014). iPhones need at least iOS 15.1 (from 2021). Anything older is left out.
Android: here are some of those affected
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Core and Galaxy Trend Lite.
- Motorola: first-generation Moto G and Moto E (the first ones to come out).
- LG: Optimus G, Optimus L5, Optimus L7, Optimus F7, Lucid 2, Nexus 4 and G2 Mini.
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia Z2 and Xperia SP.
- Huawei: Ascend Mate and Ascend G740.
- HTC: Desire 500.
iPhone: these models lose support
- iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s.
- iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
- iPhone 4s (although almost nobody uses it anymore).
Watch out: if your model doesn’t appear on the list, don’t be too confident. What matters isn’t the phone’s name, but the version of the operating system it has installed. The same model can work if it was updated in time and be left out if it was never updated.
How do I know if my phone is affected?
Checking takes less than a minute:
- On Android: go to Settings (or Configuration), look for “About phone” or “Phone info” and check the “Android version” section. If it says 4.4 or less, you’re out.
- On iPhone: go to Settings, then “General” and finally “Software Update”. If you can’t reach iOS 15.1, your phone loses support.
If your version is exactly the minimum or a little newer, try to install the latest available update as soon as possible. It’s free and it’s usually in the same menu.
What to do if your phone is left without WhatsApp
First of all, don’t panic: the change isn’t instant. First you stop receiving new versions of WhatsApp, and then the failures start when logging in or sending messages. But better safe than sorry. Do this:
- Back up your conversations. In WhatsApp, go to Settings, Chats and “Backup”. On Android it’s saved to your Google account and on iPhone to iCloud (Apple’s cloud). That way, if you ever change phones, you won’t lose your photos or your messages.
- If you can update the operating system, do it now. Many phones on the list have a newer version available and don’t know it.
- If your phone is too old, consider changing it. You don’t need to spend a fortune: a current mid-range phone works perfectly with WhatsApp and all the other apps.

WhatsApp demanding more modern phones may seem like a nuisance, but there’s a real reason behind it: old phones are easier to attack and hold back new features, like improved video calls or privacy tools. It’s the same reason manufacturers stop supporting their own devices over time.
