You type a word, press enter and, in less than a second, thousands of results appear. It is such an everyday gesture that almost nobody stops to ask what has happened in between. The answer hides one of the most sophisticated software systems that exist, and it works in three big steps: crawling, indexing and ranking.
Crawling: robots that read the internet for you
Before you can search for anything, the search engine has to know what exists on the web. To do that it uses automatic programs, known as spiders or crawlers, that tirelessly go through web pages, just like a reader turning the pages of a giant book.
These robots start with a few known pages, read their content and follow the links they find. Each link takes them to another page, which in turn has more links. So, leap by leap, they end up visiting billions of pages. It is like a map that draws itself, in which each website is a point and each link a road.
Indexing: building the file for each page
Crawling is not enough: what is found has to be stored in an orderly way. This is where indexing comes in. The search engine analyses each page, extracts its texts, its titles, its images and its technical data, and stores it all in a huge database.
You could imagine it as a library index card, but with a key difference: instead of storing the whole page as it is, it is stored in an optimised way to respond quickly. When you do a search, the search engine does not go out to browse the internet again. It consults that library, which already has the content of almost the entire web stored.
Ranking: why some results come before others
This is the most famous step and the one that keeps the most mystery. With millions of pages mentioning what you are looking for, how does the search engine decide which ones go first? Hundreds of factors come into play here, and the algorithm combines all of them into a kind of final score.
Some criteria are easy to understand: that the word appears in the title, that the page is fast and well designed for mobile devices, or that other trusted sites link to it. Others are more subtle, such as interpreting the intention of what you write. Because searching for “apple” to see the fruit is not the same as searching for it to talk about the phone or the record label.
And this is where artificial intelligence has made a huge leap in recent years. Modern search engines no longer just match words: they understand the meaning of the sentence. If you ask “what is the capital of France?”, the system understands that you want a specific fact, not a list of websites that contain those words.
The same language as you
Another advance we barely notice is that the search engine already converses. You can ask questions in natural language, correct yourself mid-sentence or chain several searches on the same topic, and the system follows the thread. It is like having a librarian who understands you even if you speak in a messy way.
Of course, not everything is perfect. Algorithms are not infallible: sometimes they privilege unreliable content or leave out valuable information. That is why knowing how a search engine works also turns us into more critical users, capable of looking at results with a certain distance.
The next revolution is already here
The current frontier is called conversational search. Instead of giving you a list of links, the search engine answers you directly with a written summary, citing its sources. It is a change of mindset: from “here are ten pages where the answer might be” to “this is the answer, and this is how we know it”.
Behind it all there is still the same trio as always: crawling, indexing and ranking. Only now, thanks to artificial intelligence, the system not only finds information: it understands it. And that small gesture of typing and pressing enter has become, without us noticing, one of the most powerful technological marvels of our time.
