PlayStation has announced that, as of January 2028, it will stop manufacturing physical discs for the new games on its consoles. The end of an era that began in 1994 with the first PlayStation arrives 34 years later, when Sony will put an end to discs as we know them.
The Japanese company confirmed the news through the official PlayStation blog, noting that new releases from that date will only be available in digital format. Games already published on disc will continue to work normally, and current consoles (PS5 and PS5 Pro) will keep reading discs without any issues. What changes is that new titles released from January 2028 simply won’t be manufactured in physical form.
This decision surprises no one. Digital video game sales have been outpacing physical ones for years, and Sony already launched a PS5 Digital and later the PS5 Pro without a disc drive altogether. For players, this means having to accept that shelves full of games, trades between friends, and second-hand reselling as we know them will gradually fade away. The upside? Digital stores and subscription services like PlayStation Plus mean you’ll never run out of access to games, as long as you have an internet connection.
