Movistar has begun warning its customers that, as of September 15, equipment that is not official will stop working. What does this mean for you? Well, if you have a router that isn’t the one the company gave you (what’s called a “neutral router”), or if you still use an old Movistar device, your internet connection could be cut off without warning.
The notice arrives by email and is quite clear: the ONT (that little device that connects the fiber cable entering your home) will stop working if you don’t use Movistar’s newest official router. The company says it wants to guarantee maximum capacity and an optimal experience for everyone, and that’s why it’s going to monitor what equipment its customers are using. Basically, they want everyone to have the router they installed, neither older nor from another brand.
If this measure affects you, there’s a solution: you can call 1004 or go to a Movistar store to have them change your equipment for a more modern one with the integrated ONT. But be careful, because Spanish law recognizes your right to use whatever router you want (article 76 of the General Telecommunications Act), so this decision has gone down like a bucket of cold water among many users. If you do nothing, as of September 15 your fiber connection could stop working.
