A report by the International Energy Agency warns that data centers could consume up to 8% of global electricity by 2030, driven by the exponential growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The study recommends accelerating the adoption of renewable energy and improving the energy efficiency of existing infrastructure to avoid an unsustainable impact on the global power grid.
Companies such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon have already announced multi-billion-dollar investments in nuclear and geothermal energy to power their data centers, and processor energy efficiency is expected to improve significantly with the adoption of ARM architectures and specialized chips for AI.
