Elon Musk has once again shaken up the tech world with an announcement that, if fulfilled, would be one of the greatest exercises in transparency ever carried out by a social platform: X (formerly Twitter) will publish all its source code “with no exceptions” and will subject its operation to an external audit to verify that the open source matches what is actually running in production.The promiseThe announcement, made on the X platform itself on July 15, comes after years of unfulfilled promises. “Once we have completed our security vulnerability review, we will publish the entire codebase as open source software, with no exceptions. In addition, we will invite external reviewers to examine the system that is running to confirm that the open source is what actually works,” Musk wrote. The statement represents a qualitative leap compared to previous attempts. In 2023, Twitter published part of its recommendation algorithm code under the AGPLv3 license, but the opening was partial: it did not include all the code the company considered sensitive for security and privacy, nor did it allow the complete system to be compiled and tested. The repository was practically abandoned months later. In early 2026, Musk returned to the matter with a new promise, this time through xAI, which published a repository with the Phoenix recommendation system based on Grok, licensed under Apache 2.0.
