The uncomfortable truth is that our devices’ batteries have a limited lifespan, and no matter how much manufacturers promise us superhuman battery life, reality is usually far more mundane. Lithium-ion batteries, which are the most common in our devices, typically have a lifespan of between 300 and 500 complete charge cycles. And what does that mean in plain English? Well, that after charging your phone about 500 times (roughly between a year and a half and two years of use), your battery’s capacity will have dropped to 80% of what it was when you bought it. It’s a bit like your ability to keep going at a party being reduced by 20% every two years… wait, that happens too!
But not all batteries are the same, and this is where things get interesting. Laptops usually have larger and more powerful batteries, but they also suffer more wear and tear from the heat they generate. A mid-range laptop can maintain good battery health for about 2-3 years, while a high-end one with better thermal management could reach 4-5 years without serious problems. Of course, this depends a lot on usage: it’s not the same to use the laptop to watch kitten memes as it is to render the next Pixar film.
Smartphones are a different story. With daily charge cycles (or even more frequent ones for TikTok addicts), their batteries usually show signs of fatigue after 18-24 months. And no, it’s not a manufacturer conspiracy to make you buy a new phone every two years… well, maybe a little. The truth is that battery technology hasn’t advanced at the same pace as the rest of the components, and we still depend on a chemistry that has its physical limitations.
Wearables like smartwatches or wireless earbuds have even smaller batteries, which means more frequent charge cycles and therefore faster degradation. If your Apple Watch or Galaxy Buds last more than two years without a significant drop in battery life, consider yourself lucky. It’s like finding a tech unicorn, rare but not impossible.
And what about those devices we use more sporadically? Tablets, for example, tend to last longer because we don’t charge them as often. An iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tab can maintain good battery health for 3-4 years without problems. E-readers like Kindle are the champions of battery life: with their electronic ink screens and their specific use for reading, they can go weeks between charges and their batteries usually last so long that you’ll probably get tired of the device before the battery says enough.
But all is not lost; there are ways to extend the life of our beloved batteries. Avoiding full charges (from 0% to 100%) is one of them. Experts recommend keeping the charge between 20% and 80% to maximise battery life. It’s also important to avoid extreme temperatures: neither leaving your phone in the sun on the beach nor using it at -10°C at the ski resort. Batteries are like Goldilocks, they like everything “neither too cold nor too hot”.
Another recommendation is to use original or good quality chargers. I know that €3 charger from the bazaar seems like a bargain, but it could be subjecting your battery to unnecessary stress. It’s like feeding an Olympic athlete fast food and expecting them to break records. It’s not going to happen, and they’ll probably end up with premature health problems.
In conclusion, batteries are a component with an expiry date, but with proper care we can extend their lifespan considerably. And if all else fails, we’ll always have the consolation that, by the time our battery dies, we’ll probably already be wanting to change devices because a new one will have come out with a holographic camera, a foldable screen in 8 dimensions or some other technological marvel that will make us forget our battery woes.
