Computing with light: how photonic chips that promise to change computing work

For decades, computers have moved information the same way: sending electrons through metal wires. But electrons have a serious problem. When they collide with each other or with the material carrying them, they generate heat and lose energy. That is why your devices get hot and why the electricity bill of large data centers is so high.

What if information traveled another way? There is an alternative that scientists have been pursuing for years: using light instead of electricity. It is the basis of photonic chips, a technology that promises faster, cooler and much more efficient computers.

What exactly is computing with light

Photonics is the science of controlling light. Instead of sending electrons through a wire, photons —the particles of light— are sent through tiny highways called waveguides, etched directly into the silicon.

The great advantage is that light barely generates heat. In addition, several beams of light can travel through the same space without interfering with each other, like several conversations in different rooms. That makes it possible to process much more information at once.

It is not a new idea. In fact, you already use photonics every day without realizing it: the fiber optic cable that brings internet to your home has been carrying data with light for years. The novelty is bringing that same idea inside the processor, into the heart of the computer.

Why light beats electrons

Imagine a single-lane road where cars have to brake and start continuously. That is a traditional chip with electrons. Now imagine a multi-lane highway where cars travel without rubbing against each other. That is a photonic chip.

This difference shows up especially in two areas: artificial intelligence and communications. AI models make millions of repeated calculations; doing them with light, which does not heat up, could accelerate them enormously and reduce power consumption.

In communications, photonic chips can connect data center servers directly with light, eliminating bottlenecks and making everything faster.

The challenge: manufacturing chips with light is not easy

If photonics is so good, why do we not already use it? Because manufacturing these chips is very complicated. Integrating the optical and electronic parts on the same piece of silicon demands astonishing precision and extremely high-quality material.

But the sector is moving at great speed. Tech giants and numerous startups are investing billions in this technology, and the first commercial photonic chips are already appearing for specific tasks.

What will change in your day to day

Do not expect to buy a computer with a photonic chip at the corner store tomorrow. There is still a way to go. But in the medium term, this technology will hide inside the services you use every day.

Faster, more stable internet, AI assistants that respond in an instant, data centers that consume less energy and, therefore, a planet that appreciates the breather. That is the promise of computing with light.

Electricity brought us the computer. Light, if everything goes as scientists hope, could take us to the next level.
