The situation is clear: Apple has fallen behind in the AI race compared to Google and Amazon, and its own engineers have acknowledged it. This purchase could be the solution to strengthen its technology base and attract new talent in artificial intelligence.
What’s interesting is that a deal would allow Apple to create its own AI-powered search engine. This is key because it currently depends on Google for searches on its devices, an agreement that generates $20 billion a year for them but is under antitrust scrutiny.
Perplexity is different from Google because it lets you ask questions in natural language instead of keywords. Its AI interprets what you’re looking for and answers with precise information, clearly showing the sources from which it draws the information.
The startup recently completed a funding round that valued it at $14 billion. If Apple buys it, it would be the largest acquisition in its history, surpassing the $3 billion it paid for Beats in 2014.
Meta also tried to buy it earlier this year, so the competition is fierce. We’ll see what happens.
Best regards,
Marta
