Apple admits it uses AI to design its chips: What’s coming our way is going to be out of this world

Srouji was clear in explaining why they are betting on this technology:

“We use AI/ML in many different parts of chip design. If you can make the design more efficient, if you can make the process more efficient, if you can make the verification more efficient, then you should do it.”

And it makes sense. If AI can optimize the design process, why not use it?

This technology isn’t just an Apple thing. According to the data, 90% of semiconductor companies are already using AI tools for chip design. It’s a trend that is transforming the entire industry.

AI can analyze millions of possible configurations in seconds, something that would take human engineers months. It can optimize performance, reduce energy consumption and improve the overall efficiency of the chip.

Because if AI can design better chips, and those chips can run more powerful AI, which in turn can design even better chips… It’s an interesting spiral of innovation.

This will translate into more powerful, more efficient devices that use less battery. Can you imagine an iPhone that lasts a whole week on a single charge? Or a Mac that is ten times faster than the current one?

And here’s the interesting part: all of this is going to arrive much sooner than we thought. Because if they used to take years to develop a new chip, now with AI they’re going to be able to do it in months.

But well, if there’s anyone who knows how to handle these technological transitions, it’s the folks at Apple. They already proved it when they moved from PowerPC to Intel, and later from Intel to Apple Silicon. And every time they’ve done it, the result has been remarkable.

I think that in the next two years we’re going to see Apple chips that will surprise us. And not just because of raw power, but because of energy efficiency and the integrated AI capabilities.
