The information comes directly from Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies. He’s confirmed that they’re betting on using generative AI to create the integrated circuits that go into our iPhones, iPads, Macs and the company’s other devices.
It turns out there are specialized companies like Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys that make software to automate chip design. And now they’ve integrated AI into their tools.
Who uses this software? Well, companies like NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Broadcom, MediaTek… practically all the big names in the sector. And Apple, of course, hasn’t been left behind.
Srouji has been clear in explaining why they’re betting on this technology:
“We use AI/ML in many different parts of chip design. If you can make the design more efficient, if you can make the process more efficient, if you can make verification more efficient, then you should do it.”
And it makes sense. If AI can optimize the design process, why not use it?
This technology isn’t just an Apple thing. According to the data, 90% of semiconductor companies are already using AI tools for chip design. It’s a trend that’s transforming the entire industry.
AI can analyze millions of possible configurations in seconds, something that would take human engineers months. It can optimize performance, reduce energy consumption and improve the chip’s overall efficiency.
Because if AI can design better chips, and those chips can run more powerful AI, which in turn can design even better chips… It’s an interesting spiral of innovation.
This is going to translate into more powerful, more efficient devices that consume less battery. Can you imagine an iPhone that lasts a week on a single charge? Or a Mac that’s ten times faster than the current one?
And here comes the interesting part: all this is going to arrive much sooner than we thought. Because if it used to take years to develop a new chip, now with AI they’re going to be able to do it in months.
But well, if there’s anyone who knows how to handle these technological transitions, it’s the folks at Apple. They already proved it when they moved from PowerPC to Intel, and then from Intel to Apple Silicon. And every time they’ve done it, the result has been remarkable.
I think that in the next two years we’re going to see Apple chips that are going to surprise us. And not just for raw power, but for energy efficiency and integrated AI capabilities.
