This robotic hand goes for a walk on its own to fetch things for you

When you think of a robotic hand, you probably picture something out of a car factory or a science fiction movie, always attached to an arm. But what if I told you that scientists have created a hand that can “detach” itself, crawl across the floor like the Addams Family hand and pick up objects by itself? Well, stop imagining, because it’s real.

A team of researchers from MIT in the United States and from EPFL in Switzerland has presented a design that breaks with everything we knew. They have developed a robotic hand that is not only super versatile, but also detachable and autonomous. The idea is to overcome the limitations of current robotic hands, which by imitating the human hand inherit its flaws, such as the difficulty of gripping objects from certain angles or having a range limited by the arm.

A design that changes everything

This new hand has a completely symmetrical design, with versions of five and even six fingers, which allows it to grip objects from any side with equal ease. But the real magic is its ability to detach from the arm and move on its own. It can crawl to a hard-to-reach corner, pick up up to three objects in a row and reconnect to the arm without dropping anything. In tests, it has shown it can replicate 33 types of human grip and support up to 2 kilograms of weight.

The applications are enormous. Think of rescue operations in collapsed buildings, where this hand could slip through gaps impossible for a full robot. Or in a factory, where it could optimize component handling, or even in space exploration missions. The possibilities are as vast as our imagination.

The future of robotics?

Of course, the project is still in development. Its creators need to test it with objects of more shapes and sizes and in real-world scenarios outside the lab. However, this advance already represents a paradigm shift. It’s a new way of understanding the interaction between robots and their environment, one that is far more flexible and efficient.

So next time you watch a horror movie with a hand that comes to life, think that, perhaps, it’s not so far from reality. Only, instead of scaring us, it’ll come to bring us the TV remote that fell behind the sofa.
