Quantum computing: the technology that promises to solve in minutes what takes years

Can you imagine a computer capable of solving in seconds a problem that would take the world’s most powerful computers years? That is what quantum computing promises, a technology that has been making noise in laboratories for years and that, in 2026, is beginning to show real signs that it is ready to leave the lab and touch our lives.

How it works and why it is so different

The computers we use every day work with bits: units of information that can only be a 0 or a 1. It is like a coin that always lands on one of its two sides. Everything you do with your phone, your laptop or your game console ultimately boils down to millions of those 0s and 1s.

Quantum computers, instead, use a magic coin called a qubit. Thanks to quantum physics, a qubit can be 0, 1… or both at the same time. And here is the key: if several qubits are entangled with each other, the computer can explore many possibilities at once instead of one after another.

That is why, for certain very specific problems, a quantum computer is not a little faster: it is billions of times faster. It does not do it “better”, it does it in a radically different way.

What real uses it already has

Although it may not seem so, this technology is no longer just lab science. Large pharmaceutical companies use it to simulate molecules and design new drugs without having to test them one by one. It has been used in developing more efficient batteries for electric cars and in optimizing logistics routes, saving millions in fuel.

It is also a double-edged sword in cybersecurity: a quantum computer with enough power could break in minutes the encryption systems that today protect your payments and your passwords. That is why we hear about “post-quantum cryptography”, a race against the clock to keep our keys secure.

You will not live with one at home (yet)

Let us be realistic. You are not going to buy a quantum computer at the neighborhood store. These machines are gigantic, take up entire rooms and need temperatures colder than outer space to work.

What changes the future is how we will use them: many people will access quantum power through the cloud, without seeing it, just as today you use apps and do not know on which server they run. It is a technology of services, not of devices on your desk.

What you can expect in the near future

Experts are cautious but hopeful. They talk of a “hotel” in which, within a few years, quantum computers will be normal tools for solving problems of energy, climate, new materials and medicine much sooner than we think.

Quantum computing is not going to change your phone tomorrow. But we are living through the era of the first prototypes that actually work. The foundations are laid and, if history repeats itself, when a technology like this begins to leave the laboratory, change takes less time than we imagine.
