Digital twins: the virtual copy that predicts breakdowns and rehearses the future

Imagine that your city, your factory or even your house had an exact digital clone that updates every second. A clone with which you can simulate what would happen if it rained a lot, if the power went out or if you completely changed a production line, all before touching a single bolt in reality. This already exists, and it is called a digital twin.

A digital twin is, in essence, a virtual copy of a physical object, process or system. But it is not a static copy like a 3D photo: it is a living copy that receives real-time data from sensors installed on the real object. If a machine’s temperature rises, its twin reflects it instantly. If an aircraft flies at 10,000 metres, its twin flies too, but inside a computer.

How does it work, simply put?

The idea has three parts. First, the sensors: small devices that measure temperature, vibration, consumption or movement in the real world. Second, the connection: that data travels over the internet (often using 5G technology) to a data centre. And third, the virtual model: a program that reproduces the real object and keeps updating with all that information.

The result is a kind of smart mirror: whatever happens to reality happens to the twin. And since the twin is only software, we can ask it questions and run experiments with no risk. What if I double production? What if this bridge withstands a stronger earthquake? The twin works it out before it actually happens.

Where they are already used

Industry was the first to fall in love with the idea. In factories, digital twins of machines help predict breakdowns before they happen: if the twin detects an anomalous vibration, technicians can intervene in time and prevent production from stopping. That translates into lower costs and more safety.

They are also used in aviation, to monitor the condition of engines, and in medicine, where digital twins of the human heart already exist to rehearse operations or test drugs without touching a real patient.

And cities are joining in: the so-called urban digital twins copy streets, traffic lights, pipes and public transport. They serve to simulate how a flood would affect things, how to improve traffic or where to plant trees to cool down a neighbourhood. Before spending money on real construction, the city is tested on a computer.

It is not science fiction, but it has limits

It sounds fantastic, and it is, but it is worth being realistic. A digital twin is only as good as the data it receives and the model that supports it. If the sensors fail or the model is too coarse a simplification, the twin can get things wrong. What is more, building one is neither cheap nor simple, so today it is reserved for large projects where the savings or the safety justify it.

There is also a debate about privacy: if an entire city has a twin that records everything, who controls that data and who decides how it is used? These are questions still being resolved.

The future: twins for everything

As sensors become cheaper and artificial intelligence more capable, digital twins will become more accurate and accessible. Experts predict that soon they will be common in building maintenance, energy management or even crop monitoring.

In the end, the digital twin is one of those technologies that makes no noise but is changing how we make decisions: it is no longer necessary to test things in the real world, because we can rehearse them first in a perfect copy. And that, in an increasingly complex world, is a huge advantage.
