Qualcomm raises Snapdragon prices from September 1: why your next Android will cost more
The most expensive component of your phone has just got more expensive. Qualcomm has confirmed that it will apply a price increase to its Snapdragon processors for all products shipped from 1 September 2026, a decision that arrives at the worst possible time for an industry that has spent years watching phone prices skyrocket. Cristiano Amon, the company’s CEO, has justified the move by the widespread cost increases affecting its entire supply chain, and although the company has not published official figures, communications sent to its customers point to double-digit percentage increases.
The news does not come in isolation. It adds to a context of tension across the whole semiconductor market: memory is experiencing what some outlets already call the “MEMOpocalypse”, graphics cards have risen again due to the DRAM crisis, and Google has confirmed that its Pixel 11 will be more expensive. The chip is not the only component that is getting more expensive, but it is one of the ones that weigh most on the final cost of a high-end smartphone.
It’s not just memory: the whole chain is strained
It is tempting to blame only the memory shortage, but Qualcomm has been explicit in pointing out that the pressure comes from several fronts at once. Besides memories, wafer fabrication, assembly, validation testing, advanced packaging and a good part of the materials needed to produce a modern SoC have all become more expensive. The stated goal of the increase is simple: return the company’s margins to their usual levels after months of absorbing cost overruns.
One important nuance worth keeping in mind: the increase will not be uniform. Qualcomm negotiates the conditions individually with each manufacturer, so the increase will vary depending on the specific processor, the contracted volume, current agreements and each brand’s commercial relationship with the company. That is why applying a single percentage to the price of all future Android phones makes no sense: those with contracts closed in advance or buying large volumes will be far better protected than a small manufacturer.
What Samsung, Xiaomi or Honor can do
Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Honor, Motorola, Oppo or Realme use Snapdragon solutions in a good number of their devices, so they will all have to decide how to manage the cost overrun. There are basically three options, and none is painless.
The first is to absorb it by reducing margins, something only the brands with the most financial muscle can afford, and only for a limited time. The second is to pass it on to the sale price, the most direct route and the one the buyer notices immediately. And the third, the most silent and probably the most common, is to compensate by adjusting other elements of the phone: less RAM or base storage, somewhat less ambitious cameras, lower-tier panels or refreshes that reuse more components from the previous generation. This last one is what should worry us most, because the price tag stays the same but the product gets worse without anyone announcing it in the press release.
The buyer is already reacting
The interesting thing is that the market is not waiting around. Qualcomm itself acknowledges that consumer behaviour is changing within the premium range: some opt for the more affordable models of that segment rather than the top of the range, and some simply buy last year’s flagship. It is a perfectly rational reaction. When every new generation rises in price while its improvements are increasingly incremental, a twelve-month-old phone offers a performance-to-cost ratio that is hard to beat.
And the alternatives? Falling back on a previous-generation Snapdragon or switching to MediaTek can help contain costs on specific products, but neither guarantees stability in the final price. Greater demand for old chips also ends up making them more expensive or exhausting their availability, and MediaTek depends on exactly the same factories, memories, packaging and materials subject to the same pressures. Manufacturers with their own silicon, such as Google with its Tensor or Samsung with Exynos, are somewhat better covered, but they are not immune either: they still depend on external foundries and a memory market that is just as strained.
A more expensive ecosystem, not just a more expensive chip
Qualcomm’s decision does not mean that tomorrow all Android phones will cost more. What it does do is further narrow the margin manufacturers had left to contain prices. And its effects will not be seen only in the figures in the shops: they will also appear in less ambitious generations, in components reused for longer, and in high ranges where the basic model ends up being the only truly recommendable option.
For the Spanish user, the practical takeaway is simple. If you were thinking of renewing your phone in the coming months, bringing the purchase forward before the new price structure reaches the channel can save you money. And if you are looking for value, the flagship of the previous generation remains, by far, the most sensible buy. Snapdragon will continue to be a central piece of the Android ecosystem, but it will also be a more expensive part of a bill that had already been growing for far too long.
