OpenAI re-enables ChatGPT on WhatsApp for European users
OpenAI has restored access to ChatGPT through WhatsApp in the European Union after several months of absence. The feature, which lets you chat with the AI assistant directly from Meta’s messaging app, is once again available to all European users.
The integration works simply: users just have to add OpenAI’s number to their WhatsApp contacts and start typing. There is no need to register or pay anything, although the free version has certain limits on the number of messages. From the messaging app you can ask the chatbot anything, just as you would from the web or the official ChatGPT app.
OpenAI had disabled this functionality in Europe last year due to the doubts raised by European privacy regulation, especially the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). During that time, European users were left without being able to use this route to access the assistant, while in other countries such as the United States the feature continued to work normally.
ChatGPT’s return to WhatsApp in the EU comes after OpenAI adjusted its privacy and data processing policies to comply with European regulation. The company assures that the data of users who use ChatGPT through WhatsApp is now managed in accordance with GDPR and that users have control over their conversations.
To use ChatGPT on WhatsApp, the steps are very simple:
- Save the number +1 (800) 242-8478 in your contacts
- Open WhatsApp and search for the contact
- Type your message or question
- The assistant will reply to you as if you were chatting with any other contact
This integration is especially useful for those who prefer not to install another app or don’t want to use the OpenAI website. WhatsApp is already deeply integrated into the daily lives of millions of Europeans, so having ChatGPT just one message away makes artificial intelligence much more accessible for everyone.
The version of ChatGPT on WhatsApp does not include all the features of the web app, such as image generation or document analysis, but it does allow you to hold fluid conversations, resolve doubts, ask for advice or even generate short texts. It is, basically, the same old ChatGPT but from the most popular messaging app on the planet.
