Chinese artificial intelligence has just made a statement. The startup Moonshot AI, backed by Alibaba and Tencent, has presented Kimi K3, a massive language model with 2.8 trillion parameters that officially becomes the largest open source AI system ever published. And the most striking part: its full weights will be released next 27 July so that anyone can download, modify, and run them on their own infrastructure.

What makes Kimi K3 special?

To give you an idea of the magnitude: the model has more than four times the parameters of DeepSeek V3 (671 billion) and competes directly with the most advanced closed systems from OpenAI (GPT-5.6 Sol) and Anthropic (Claude Fable 5). These are its key figures:

  • 2.8 trillion parameters in a sparse MoE (Mixture of Experts) architecture
  • 1 million token context window — enough to process entire books at once

China strikes back in the AI war

The launch of Kimi K3 is not just a technical milestone. It is a calculated geopolitical move. While the United States tries to restrict the export of advanced chips to China, Moonshot AI shows that Chinese talent and innovation can compete without needing the most cutting-edge NVIDIA hardware.

The model uses two proprietary architectural innovations: Kimi Delta Attention (KDA) and Attention Residuals (AttnRes), which improve computational efficiency and allow handling ultra-long contexts without skyrocketing costs.

What does it mean for the average user?

Although 2.8 trillion parameters may sound like science fiction, the applications are very concrete:

  • Programming: Kimi K3 can generate, review, and debug complex code better than any current open model
  • Document analysis: its 1M token window allows processing lengthy reports, books, or complete documentary databases
  • Autonomous agents: it is specifically designed for agentic tasks, where AI makes decisions and executes actions over multiple steps

Availability and price

Kimi K3 is already operational on the Kimi.com platform, Kimi Work, Kimi Code, and through the Moonshot API. The prices are 3 dollars per million input tokens and 15 dollars per million output tokens, notably cheaper than GPT-5.6 Sol.

But the truly revolutionary part arrives on 27 July: the publication of the model’s full weights will allow any developer, company, or institution to set up its own Kimi K3 instance on local servers, eliminating dependence on external APIs and guaranteeing data privacy.

The regulation debate
