Elon Musk was up to his old tricks again with one of those statements that make you wonder whether he’s being a visionary or simply optimistic to the extreme. This time, the Tesla CEO assured that by the end of 2025, half of the US population could have access to the company’s robotaxis. And yes, we’re talking about cars that drive themselves carrying passengers from one place to another.

The promise is ambitious, especially considering that Tesla’s current robotaxi deployment is fairly limited. But knowing Musk, it wouldn’t be the first time he turns an apparently impossible goal into reality, though perhaps not exactly within the timeframes he initially promised.

What makes this statement interesting is the context in which it’s made. The autonomous vehicle market is hotter than ever, with Google’s Waymo already operating in several cities and other companies like Cruise trying to regain ground after some stumbles. Tesla needs to prove that its camera- and AI-based approach can compete with the more expensive systems that use LiDAR.

Tesla’s strategy has always been different. While other companies meticulously map every street and corner, Tesla bets on an AI system that can adapt to any environment, similar to how a human driver would. It’s a risky bet, but if it works, it could be much more scalable.

For current Tesla owners, this could mean their vehicles become a source of passive income. The idea is that you can send your car to work as a taxi while you’re at the office or sleeping. It sounds like science fiction, but the technology is already there; it just needs the regulatory and safety details to be polished.

Of course, there are huge challenges ahead. Regulations vary from state to state, and convincing the authorities that robotaxis are safe won’t be an easy task. Not to mention that taxi and Uber drivers probably won’t be very happy with the automated competition.

The million-dollar question is whether Tesla will be able to deliver on this ambitious promise. The company has a mixed track record when it comes to meeting deadlines, but it also has an impressive ability to innovate and scale quickly when it sets its mind to it.

If Musk is right and by December we can see Tesla robotaxis operating in cities all over the United States, we’ll be witnessing one of the most significant changes in urban transportation in decades. And if not, well, at least we’ll have had a fascinating conversation about the future of mobility.

One thing is certain: 2025 is shaping up to be the year autonomous vehicles stop being a technological curiosity and become an everyday reality. And Tesla seems determined to lead that transformation, with Musk at the wheel, so to speak.
