Jack Dorsey wants to dethrone Slack with Buzz: a team chat where humans and AI agents collaborate in the same place
Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Block, has presented Buzz, a new group chat platform for work teams that integrates artificial intelligence agents directly into conversations. The app, already available in desktop version for macOS, Windows and Linux, is fully open source and promises to reduce dependence on Slack and GitHub.
The creator of Twitter has done it again. Jack Dorsey announced on Tuesday the launch of Buzz, a chat application for the work environment that seeks to compete directly with Slack and GitHub. But Buzz is not just another clone of team chat: its big differentiator is that it is designed from scratch so that humans and AI agents share the same conversation space.
According to Dorsey himself on X (formerly Twitter), Buzz is «model-agnostic, decentralized, self-hosted and open source». On its official website they describe it as «a new group chat platform for teams of people and agents of all sizes, built to reduce our dependence on Slack and GitHub».
¿And why does this matter to us? Because more and more companies and teams use artificial intelligence agents to automate tasks, review code, generate documentation or answer questions. The problem is that today these agents usually live on separate platforms: Slack for chat, GitHub for code, Notion for documentation… Buzz proposes to unify it all in one place, where AI agents are first-class citizens in the conversation, not mere robots that respond to commands.
Being open source, any team can customize its own Buzz instance and adapt it to its specific needs. If a team needs a functionality that does not exist, it can develop it itself. This contrasts with Slack, where many advanced features require paid plans or are limited by the platform.
Dorsey is not the only entrepreneur exploring native AI alternatives to Slack. Georgios Konstantopoulos, CTO of Paradigm, recently presented Centaur, a similar product that works inside Slack or through an API. The trend is clear: productivity software is being rethought from scratch for the era of AI agents.
Buzz admits it is at a very early stage («dev» version), but its free desktop app is already available for download. The code has been published on GitHub, allowing the community to contribute to its development from day one.
For small teams and startups already using AI agents in their workflow, Buzz can be an interesting alternative to Slack, especially because it does not require paying per user and offers the flexibility of open source. We will have to see if it achieves enough adoption to become a real competitor, but one thing is clear: the way we collaborate at work is changing, and Buzz is one more symptom of that transformation.
