OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is working on its first physical device. According to Bloomberg, it is a smart speaker without a screen that would function as the physical embodiment of its conversational assistant, bringing generative artificial intelligence to the center of the home.
The device that wants to be more than a speaker
OpenAI is not designing a simple smart speaker in the style of Amazon Echo or Google Nest. According to internal sources cited by Bloomberg, the company conceives of it as a computer designed from the outset to work with artificial intelligence. The fundamental difference would lie in its ability to interpret what is happening around it through a camera, multiple sensors and AI models more advanced than those available in conventional home assistants. Instead of processing an isolated instruction (“play music”, “what’s the weather”), the system could take into account the environment and the specific moment to determine what information is useful and how it should respond. OpenAI’s vision is that the assistant learns from the user and offers help before they have to ask for it, moving from a reactive model to a proactive one.
Anticipated technical features
Although OpenAI has not officially confirmed the project, rumors point to the following features:
- No screen: unlike devices such as the Echo Show or the Google Nest Hub, OpenAI’s device would be a speaker without a screen, focused exclusively on voice interaction.
- Camera and sensors: they would allow the device to understand the visual context of the environment, identify who is speaking and adjust its responses according to the situation.
- GPT-Live based voice: it would use the advanced voice mode that OpenAI has already demonstrated in ChatGPT, with the ability to hold fluid, natural conversations, detect emotional tone and respond in real time.
- Permanent cloud connection: being always connected to OpenAI’s servers, it would have access to the most powerful models without the limitations of local processing.
- Mechanical elements: according to Bloomberg, the device would include moving parts, possibly to orient the camera or to give visual signals that it is paying attention.
OpenAI’s strategy: from the cloud to the home
This move represents an important strategic shift for OpenAI. Until now, the company has operated exclusively in the software field, offering ChatGPT as a web service and mobile application. With this device, OpenAI makes the leap into home hardware, a market dominated by Amazon (Alexa), Google (Assistant) and Apple (Siri). The bet is not casual. Traditional voice assistants have been running for years with limited logic: the user gives an order and the device executes a task. The arrival of advanced language models (LLMs) promises to break that limit, offering much more natural conversations, reasoning ability and contextual memory. OpenAI wants to be the one to lead that transformation.
Competition on the horizon
OpenAI is not the only one seeing this opportunity. Amazon is renewing Alexa with generative AI capabilities (Alexa+), Google is integrating Gemini into its speakers, and Apple is strengthening Siri with Apple Intelligence. However, OpenAI’s advantage is its position as a benchmark in conversational AI with ChatGPT, the most recognized brand in the sector. According to Bloomberg, the device could be announced in the coming months, although the project is still in the development phase and plans could change. What is clear is that the smart assistant war has entered a new era, and OpenAI wants a seat at the table.
