We all have a drawer at home full of devices we no longer use: a phone that ran out of battery, an orphan charger, a computer that no longer starts. Those objects are not just any rubbish: they are part of what is called “electronic waste”, one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. And, contrary to what it may seem, they hide a problem and, at the same time, an enormous opportunity.
What electronic waste exactly is
We are talking about any device that works with electricity or batteries and that we throw away: from a washing machine to a pair of earphones, including the phone, the tablet or the computer mouse. In English it is known as e-waste, and every year tens of millions of tonnes are generated across the planet. It is such a large volume that, if we weighed it, it would far exceed many other types of household waste.
The problem is not only the volume. It is that these devices contain valuable materials (gold, copper, lithium, rare earths) mixed with others that, if poorly managed, can be harmful to health and the environment.
The treasure hidden in your drawers
It may sound surprising, but an old phone contains more gold, in proportion to its weight, than a rock extracted from a mine. Electronic circuits use small amounts of precious metals because they conduct electricity very well and barely oxidize.
When we throw a device into the ordinary rubbish, that treasure is lost. And to make a new phone, those metals have to be extracted from the ground again, a process that uses up energy and water and leaves its footprint. If, instead, we recover the materials from old devices, we reduce the need to open new mines and save resources. This is called urban mining: the idea that cities are, in reality, mines full of reusable metals.
What happens when a device is really recycled
When a phone reaches a recycling plant, it is not melted down as is. First it is disassembled. The parts that still work are separated and can be reused; the batteries are removed because they are delicate and can catch fire if damaged. Then, the materials are shredded and separated with magnets, air currents and more advanced techniques, until each metal is left on its own. That clean material returns to the market to make new products.
That is why it is so important not to throw devices into the usual bin. In many places there are clean points, shops that collect the old ones when you buy a new one, and specific campaigns. A well-channelled device is worth much more than one abandoned anywhere.
What you can do, without complicating things
The good news is that individual decisions count more than it seems. Before getting rid of a device, think about extending its life: a new battery or a simple repair can give it several more years of use. If it really no longer works, look for the appropriate collection point in your city instead of mixing it with household waste.
And if the device still works but you do not need it, consider donating it or selling it second-hand. Every device that is reused is a device that does not have to be manufactured from scratch, with all the energy and raw materials savings that entails.
A challenge that is also an opportunity
Electronic waste is one of those problems that seem invisible because they happen in drawers and landfills, far from our sight. But the way we manage it will say a lot about how we understand the planet’s resources.
Technology advances at great speed and devices are renewed earlier and earlier. Learning to give them a second life is not just a good environmental practice: it is the smartest way to take advantage of all that treasure that, today, is dozing in our drawers.
