If you thought your phone was your private space, I have news that’s going to surprise you. A recent study by AIPRM has just revealed which apps snoop the most on your digital life, and spoiler alert: the ones you use most are at the top of the list.
Facebook and Instagram take first place in this competition nobody wanted to win. These Meta apps use a whopping 86% of your personal data to show you advertising and promote their products. It’s like they have a giant magnifying glass over everything you do online.
But it doesn’t end there. Klarna, that payments app that’s all the rage, collects 64% of your information for marketing purposes. And if you’re one of those people who can’t live without Uber, both the main app and Uber Eats are collecting 57% of your data for their own commercial benefit.
What’s most worrying is that Instagram and Facebook don’t just collect your information; they also share it with third parties. Instagram hands over 79% of the data it collects, while Facebook shares 57%. It’s as if they were selling your personal information at a digital auction.
The picture is so concerning that 68% of users worldwide are “somewhat concerned” or “very concerned” about their online privacy. And it’s no wonder: 85% of people have deleted an app from their phone over privacy concerns in the past year.
The reality is that these apps have turned our attention into a business. As Christoph Cemper, founder of AIPRM, puts it: “If the user doesn’t take security measures, malicious agents could access large amounts of their personal data, potentially exposing them to fraud or identity theft.”
What can you do? Review your apps’ privacy settings, read the policies (yes, the ones nobody reads), and consider whether you really need so many notifications. Your privacy is worth more than the convenience of having everything automated.
